Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ shooting trial begins with jury selection as actor faces involuntary manslaughter charges

Video: Alec Baldwin spotted on the set of Rust after

Hollywood star Alec Baldwin has arrived at a Santa Fe courthouse to face trial for the fatal shooting of camerawoman Halyna Hutchins on the set of the film Rust.

It’s been nearly three years since a rehearsal for a shootout in the Western film ended tragically when a prop gun Baldwin was holding went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin, 66, has maintained that he did not pull the trigger on the gun and did not know it contained a live bullet, saying it was fired accidentally.

He is charged with a single count of involuntary manslaughter for the October 2021 incident and faces up to 18 months in prison if found guilty.

Baldwin appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing, where the judge ruled that Baldwin’s role as a co-producer of the film is not relevant to the case.

Jury selection is currently underway in Santa Fe, New Mexico, with opening statements expected to begin Wednesday.

Baldwin’s high-profile trial comes after the film’s gunmaker, Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in April and sentenced to the maximum 18 months in prison.

A look at Alec Baldwin’s career

Before the horrific 2021 shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of “Rust” put Alec Baldwin’s career on the line, he was adopting a broad spectrum of variations on masculinity and sending them into the air.

He has gone from heroic roles to villains, villains, gentle father figures, office alpha males, and a “boss.” He has gone from lead actor to extra to scene stealer, and sometimes he has gone years without a major role in a successful film or series.

But he’s been a household name for nearly 35 years, largely thanks to his real-life persona: as an outspoken liberal, occasional hothead, talk show host, podcast host, game show host and the king of all “Saturday Night Live” hosts.

Below is an overview of Baldwin’s career inside and outside of Hollywood:

Who is Alec Baldwin?

Baldwin, 66, rose to fame in the late 1980s and early 1990s with films such as “Beetlejuice” and “The Hunt for Red October” and has remained a household name ever since.

He would go on to have memorable supporting roles in films, including 2003’s “The Cooler,” for which he received an Oscar nomination. Comedy dominated his later career, as he won two Emmys for his role as network executive Jack Donaghy on six seasons of “30 Rock” and a third for his role as Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live.”

He also played the role of an outrageous public personality, as a beloved talk show guest, a sought-after liberal and at times as a man unable to control his angry outbursts, leading to public humiliation and a previous run-in with the law that was far less serious than the current one.

Baldwin is the eldest of six children, five of whom are actors, from Massapequa, New York. He has lived most of his adult life in New York City.

He has an adult daughter, Ireland Baldwin, with his first wife Kim Basinger and seven young children with his second wife, Hilaria Baldwin.

Why Jury Selection for Alec Baldwin May Be Moving Faster Than Other Celebrity Trials

Jury selection in high-profile cases can take several weeks as attorneys try to find jurors who are not biased.

According to local news outlet KCCI, this may not be the case.

In New Mexico, where the trial is taking place, residents selected for jury service receive an online questionnaire listing all the cases in which a juror could serve, KCCI reports.

On Tuesday, 78 potential jurors were interviewed as a group. Only 12 jurors, plus alternates, will be selected.

They are expected to be selected when opening statements begin on Tuesday.

What You Need to Know About Movie Gun Maker Hannah Gutierrez-Reed’s Prison Sentence

Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, a film gunsmith, received the maximum sentence of 18 months in prison for involuntary manslaughter in the fatal shooting of a cameraman by Alec Baldwin on the set of a Western film.

A New Mexico judge ruled that Gutierrez-Reed’s recklessness amounted to a serious violent crime, saying there had been little evidence of genuine remorse from the defendant since her conviction in March.

Prosecutors accuse Gutierrez-Reed of unknowingly bringing live ammunition onto the set of “Rust,” where it was expressly prohibited, and of failing to follow basic gun safety protocols.

Attention now turns to Baldwin’s trial on charges of involuntary manslaughter in connection with the October 2021 death of Halyna Hutchins at a movie ranch on the outskirts of Santa Fe.
