Cooper Flagg ‘dominates’ in practice match against US Olympic team

Cooper Flagg is about to become a household name.

Flagg, Duke’s first-year star, played in an exhibition game against the U.S. basketball team in Las Vegas on Monday. According to eyewitnesses, he made a big impression.

“Cooper Flagg dominates this exhibition game against the USA,” wrote the Boston Globe’s Adam Himmelsbach on X, noting that the Duke commit’s highlights included a 3-pointer over Anthony Davis, a turnaround jumper over Jrue Holiday and an and-one on a put-back.

Ben Golliver of the Washington Post added that Flagg had “taken over” the scrimmage, posting video of Flagg’s shot over Davis and the and-one put-back.

When Flagg was named to the Select Team for Team USA’s opponents, ESPN reported that he was the first college player to receive that honor since Doug McDermott and Marcus Smart in 2013.

Both Smart and McDermott were lottery picks in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Flagg, a 6-foot-1 forward from Maine who is among the best players in his class, is the favorite to be the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft.

He will be 18 in December.

“As a former member of the USA Select Team, I know how important and exciting this opportunity is for each of these players,” Grant Hill, USA Basketball’s managing director and a Duke alumnus and former top draft pick in his own right, said in a statement in June.

“There is a tremendous amount of talent on this Select team with the important task of helping the 2024 U.S. Men’s National Team on their journey to the Olympic Games. Each of these athletes will play a role in our preparation, while also developing the national team pipeline for the future.”

Team USA’s basketball roster includes Bam Adebayo, Devin Booker, Steph Curry, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Haliburton, Jrue Holiday, LeBron James, Kawhi Leonard and Jayson Tatum.

The head coach is Steve Kerr.

According to the latest odds on DraftKings, Team USA is a -390 favorite to win the gold medal at the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris.
