DC Area Forecast: No letup in heat today. Cooler Friday, then warmer again.

*Heat warning today from 12:00 to 20:00*

A somewhat subjective assessment of the day’s weather, on a scale of 0 to 10.

1/10: A decent breeze is the only salvation on this terribly hot and humid day.

  • Today: Hot and extremely humid. Isolated afternoon storm? Highs: Mid to upper 90s.
  • This evening: Evening showers and thunderstorms, slightly less humid at night. Lows: Low to mid 70s.
  • Tomorrow: Not as warm and humid. Isolated afternoon storm? Highs: Low to mid 90s.

Friday could be tough to reach 90 and brings our best chance for much needed rain. So don’t say we never bring you good news, okay? As for today, it’s brutally hot and humid again, with some showers and storms possible tonight. Tomorrow won’t be as hot or humid, but we’re headed in the wrong direction again this weekend, next week.

Today (Wednesday): Partly to mostly sunny, warm, and extremely humid again. Afternoon temperatures should be in the mid to high 90s, with the heat index peaking at 105 to 110. One difference today will be a noticeable breeze from the south, increasing to 10 to 20 mph in the afternoon. That should help move the air around a bit, though it will only amplify the moisture increase from the south. An isolated shower or storm possible in the afternoon. Confidence: Medium-high

This evening: A line of showers and storms looks set to cross the region from west to east around 6:00 PM to midnight as a cold front approaches and moves through. It is uncertain whether this will be a continuous line that will sweep across the region, or a broken line of alternating showers and storms. A few storms could pack damaging winds. Humidity will begin to decrease overnight as winds shift out of the west and lows will drop to the low to mid 70s. Confidence: Average

Tomorrow (Thursday): Heat and humidity are a bit more reasonable. Highs will be in the low to mid 90s with mostly sunny skies. Moderate humidity (dew points in the mid 60s) will only push the heat index a degree or two higher if a light breeze blows from the west. Only the chance of an isolated afternoon shower or storm as the front moves east. Confidence: Medium-High

Tomorrow evening: Still just a chance of an isolated shower or storm in the evening. A few showers and storms could develop overnight as humidity rises again with lows in the low to mid 70s. Confidence: Average

Occasionally more showers and thunderstorms are possible Friday to Friday evening as the front moves back toward us. More showers and storms are more likely near DC and I-95 in the east, and less likely in the west. Humidity is back up, but with plenty of clouds and hopefully some much needed rain, we’ll be cooler with highs in the 80s to near 90. Lows will fall into the mid 70s by Friday night. Confidence: Average

For the weekendThe front may stay close enough for a few showers and storms to develop on Saturday as we warm up again, with highs in the upper 90s to low 90s. We’ll be heading into the mid-90s on Sunday with an even smaller chance of a shower or storm. Skies should be at least partly sunny both days with moderate to high humidity. Confidence: Average
