Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who spent eight and a half years in prison for helping to kill her abusive mother, announced Tuesday that she is going to become a mother herself.

Blanchard shared the news on social media that she and her ex-fiancé Ken Urker are expecting their first child.

“We’re both very excited,” she said in a YouTube video. “This wasn’t planned at all. It was totally unexpected, but we’re both very excited to start this new journey of parenthood.”

Blanchard said her life has changed now that she’s pregnant and she doesn’t worry about “drama” anymore.

“Suddenly it’s not about you anymore,” she said. “It’s about nothing but the little life inside you that you now have to protect.”

“And that little life is a baby, a little person that’s yours,” she added, getting emotional. “That you have to make sure that you protect, love, nurture and all those things that I wish I had when I was little.”

Blanchard spent her childhood and early adulthood believing she suffered from a host of medical conditions, including leukemia, muscular dystrophy and asthma, when in reality she was a victim of Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a rare syndrome in which a caregiver feigns or exaggerates someone’s illness to gain attention or pity.

The young woman became a tabloid favorite after her mother Dee Dee Blanchard was found dead in their home near Springfield, Missouri, in 2015.

Investigation revealed not only that the elder Blanchard played a role in her daughter’s feigned illnesses in her youth, but also that her daughter convinced her then-boyfriend Nicholas Godejohn to murder her mother while she slept to escape the abuse.

Gypsy Rose Blanchard pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016. Due to the unique circumstances, prosecutors ultimately sentenced her to 10 years in prison.

She was released in December 2023, telling CNN shortly afterward: “For me, prison was an opportunity to build my own life, where I became independent from everyone.”

Since her release, she has continued to receive a lot of media attention.

She and Urker met and became engaged while she was in prison, but separated in 2022.

Shortly after their split, Blanchard married Louisiana teacher Ryan Anderson in prison in July 2022. They split again in March.

She and Urker rekindled their romance.

Blanchard said they are looking forward to welcoming their baby in January.
