Kroger and Albertsons publish list of stores in Southern California and the US that will be sold if they merge

LOS ANGELES (CNS) — Kroger and Albertsons on Tuesday released a list of 579 stores that would be sold as part of a proposed mega-merger of the supermarket giants, including 63 locations in California.

The vast majority of California locations are in Southern California.

According to Bloomberg, Kroger’s CEO has sent a memo to employees at all affected stores, informing them of plans to spin off the locations to C&S Wholesale Grocers if the merger goes through. All employees are expected to retain their employment with C.&S, officials said.

The Federal Trade Commission has appealed the merger, saying the proposed $24.6 billion merger would lead to higher grocery prices by reducing competition in the marketplace and potentially negatively impacting workers.

Kroger denies such claims and insists that no stores, distribution centers or manufacturing facilities will be closed. According to Kroger, “customers will benefit from lower prices and more choice” as a result of the merger.

The United Food and Commercial Workers union, which represents grocery store workers, issued a statement Tuesday saying it remains opposed to the merger.

“Today’s announcement changes nothing,” the union said. “The merger is not closed, far from it. We remain focused on stopping this proposed mega-merger for the same reasons we’ve been saying since it was first announced more than 20 months ago — because we know it would be harmful to workers, it would be harmful to shoppers, it would be harmful to suppliers and communities, and it is illegal. The merger proposal was rejected in January and February by the Colorado and Washington attorneys general and the Federal Trade Commission. We applaud their actions. They have been in possession of this proposed divestiture list, which the companies made public today, for months and that has not changed their opposition to the proposed merger. These legal challenges to the proposed merger continue with hearings beginning in late July and scheduled to last through September.”
