Senators confront Secret Service director on Republican convention floor

A shocking scene unfolded Wednesday during the Republican National Convention when a group of Republican senators chased Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle through the Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee, chanting that she refused to answer questions about the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump.

“This was an assassination attempt! You owe the people answers. You owe President Trump answers!” Tennessee Sen. Marsha Blackburn shouted at Cheatle, who continued to walk with her head down and ignored the senators’ criticism.

“It’s obstruction!” said Senator John Barrasso, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate.

Blackburn later posted a video of the meeting on X, writing, “The American people deserve answers from the Secret Service.”

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General announced Wednesday that it is investigating the circumstances surrounding Saturday’s assassination attempt. Republicans in Congress have also announced plans to launch their own investigation.

Cheatle told CNN in an interview Tuesday night that the U.S. Secret Service was “solely responsible” for implementing and executing security at the site of Saturday’s rally.

“At that particular location, we have divided up the areas of responsibility, but the Secret Service is fully responsible for the design, implementation and operation of the site,” she told CNN.

CNN’s Whitney Wild and Jeremy Herb contributed to this report.
