Stop & Shop has announced that it will close 32 underperforming supermarkets in five New England states by the end of the year.
The local supermarket chain, which is owned by Ahold Delhaize USA Company, announced plans on Friday to close in the following states:
“Stop & Shop is proud of the deep roots and community connections we have developed as a neighborhood grocery brand over 100 years, and we remain committed to nourishing our associates, customers and communities,” said Gordon Reid, president of Stop & Shop. “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated our entire store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores in order to create a healthy foundation for the future growth of our brand.”
Grocery stores in the five states are expected to close on or before Nov. 2. The closures will be on a rolling basis, the release said.
The chain said it will continue to open 350 stores in the five states.

Future Plans for Stop & Shop
While the company has announced the closure of 32 stores in five New England states, the grocery chain is already looking ahead to the future.
“I want to share – while this news is difficult, we are proud of our retention of associates and the investments we are making in the Stop & Shop brand for future growth, particularly by delivering lower prices and improving the customer experience through remodels,” Medeiros said. “Since 2018, we have completed more than 190 store remodels with the customer experience in mind, and these stores are outperforming other Stop & Shop stores that have not undergone remodels.”
