More than 60 supermarkets, mostly in Southern California, are among the hundreds of stores, distribution centers and manufacturing plants that will be sold if federal regulators approve a merger between Kroger Co. and Albertsons.
The list includes the stores and facilities that will be transferred from the merging companies to C&S Wholesale Grocers if the merger goes ahead.
A total of 31 Vons, 16 Pavilions and Albertsons, and one Safeway locations in California have been identified as affected stores.
Bloomberg reported that Kroger has begun informing employees at the affected locations that they will be joining C&S after the merger.
The merger between Kroger and Albertson was announced in October 2022, but the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit in February to stop the merger.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), the merger represents about 20% of the U.S. grocery market and, if approved, would affect one in six grocery store workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
“We remain focused on stopping this proposed mega-merger for the same reasons we have been pushing for it since it was first announced more than 20 months ago — because we know it would be harmful to workers, it would be harmful to shoppers, it would be harmful to suppliers and communities, and it is illegal,” United Food & Commercial Workers, a union representing grocery store workers, said in a statement to USA Today.
