Warframe Staff Reveals Intel’s 14th and 13th Gen CPUs Are to Blame for Instability Issues, i9-13900K Takes Major Portion

The creators of Warframe have presented their findings on Intel’s CPU instability issues, revealing that 14th and 13th generation chips are responsible for severe crashes in games.

Intel’s 14th and 13th Gen CPUs are starting to plague the gaming industry with frequent crashes and unstable performance, Warframe creators share their findings

It seems that the Intel 14th and 13th generation CPU debacle is no longer limited to individual communities, as game developers are starting to talk about how Intel’s Core i9 chips are really annoying their users.

We recently reported on a reveal by Alderon Games, in which the studio’s founder urged users to switch to alternative CPUs, such as those from AMD, to avoid falling victim to game crashes and unstable performance. Now, the developers behind Warframe have revealed the percentage of Intel CPUs responsible for game crashes, and it doesn’t look good.

Everything was fine for us, but it still kept crashing during the most basic actions, like starting the game and flying to a mission.

Since the crash wasn’t in our code, it was hard to guess what we were doing wrong, but when we looked at the reports we noticed that these crashes often occurred when the graphics driver was working very hard across all of the CPU’s cores. The penny dropped when we realized that this was a particularly power-hungry state for the processor to be in, and we were reminded of a recent report from Intel suggesting that a BIOS update might help.

Warframe developers collected data from several Intel CPUs, which were displaying the error code “nvgpucomp64.dll”, which is an error state from NVIDIA drivers, likely to occur when the processor is in a “power-hungry” state and is under heavy workload. The data showed that Intel’s Core i9-13900K was responsible for 29.5% of game crashes with the error code, while the Intel Core i9-14900K and Core i9-14900KF combined accounted for up to 34% of the share. The rest of the share was held by various models, such as the Core i7-14700K, but the general trend was that 13th Gen and 14th Gen CPUs were vulnerable to the issue.

Interestingly enough, a Warframe employee encountered the same error code, so they decided to debug the issue, only to discover that the crashes were related to the onboard Intel CPU, as the error code refers to a state where the GPU is “working very hard across all CPU cores”, meaning that the onboard processor’s power consumption was going through the roof. To mitigate the issue, the individuals implemented the BIOS update recommended by Intel, and that helped fix the issue to some extent.

Warframe has advised its users to hold off on tinkering with their Intel processors for the time being if they’re working fine, and if you’re “lucky” enough not to have the affected processors and are still getting the same error code, the developers are releasing a fix soon. Well, it seems like there’s a huge wave of problems heading towards Intel, whether it’s in the form of consumer distrust or even adoption of its upcoming processors. For AMD, it might just turn out to be a blessing in disguise, as the internet is now suggesting it switch to Team Red.
