A woman who nearly died after a deadly bacteria ate away the tip of her nose says baking soda saved her life.
Beatrice Johnson nearly died six months ago after she fell ill and suffered from stomach problems.
Doctors at Tunbridge Wells Hospital in Kent, England, discovered the 60-year-old was in septic shock and advised her loved ones to say goodbye.
But in a last-ditch attempt to save her life, doctors added sodium bicarbonate to her IV, as an alternative to dialysis.
The unusual treatment was a success and within days Beatrice felt ‘miles better’.
After 36 days she was discharged from the hospital and is recovering well, along with her sister.
“I never thought something so simple would save my life,” Beatrice said. “I honestly thought I was going to die.
“I am grateful that they never gave up on my life.
“The baking soda made me rise like a cake! No one thought I’d be here today.”

Beatrice’s ordeal began at home when she began to feel weak. As the day progressed, her condition worsened and she even had difficulty walking up the stairs.
She realized something was wrong and called an ambulance. Within 10 minutes she was rushed to the hospital.
“When the emergency services arrived, they couldn’t find my blood pressure. They were surprised that I was still conscious.”
Scans showed her kidneys were starting to fail and she needed dialysis. Beatrice lost consciousness and was put on a ventilator, and doctors called her three children to say their final goodbyes.

Despite the best efforts of doctors, she continued to deteriorate until they introduced sodium bicarbonate (also known as baking soda), an accepted alternative to dialysis in severe cases.
Within days, Beatrice made a miraculous recovery and within a week she woke from her coma.
She ‘quickly felt like a new woman’ and was taken off the ventilator.
“Within one day I was like a different person.”
After she regained consciousness, doctors told her that the tip of her nose had been eaten away by a flesh-eating bacteria called necrotizing fasciitis, a rare bacterial infection that spreads quickly and can be fatal.

Antibiotics have stopped the spread and her nose is now healing, after she was discharged from hospital 43 days after being told she would die.
“I’m shocked that I’m still here.
“The recovery time was incredible and I owe that to the doctors.
“I never thought baking soda would save my life.”
